Helena was introduced to the Design Collab [DC] brand after an open invitation design competition was issued to designers with a design brief that required the participants to use only a range of specific sizes of reclaimed materials produced as by-products of mass commercial joinery manufacturing produced by DC’s sister company; Glavcom. The panel of judges; which included seasoned industry professionals consisting of an architect, interior designer and DC’s founder, Angela Callipari; praised innovative and intelligent use of the specific materials and dimensions that when fabricated made little to no waste, as well highlighted the originality and simplicity of the design and production process.
Helena’s winning design was a small study/note desk that took advantage of the dimensional constraints of the given off-cut sizes. Helena design the desk in such a manner that the larger pieces required to create the desk were optimised in such a fashion that ensured that the smaller off-cut pieces created other aspects of the piece creating near 100% optimisation of the material.
